THE JOSHUA RING LIVER TRANSPLANT FUND

Joshua Ring, of Ellicott City, MD, was placed on the liver transplant list at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) in March, 2000.  Joshua suffers from Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC), a rare liver disorder which results in the blockage of the bile ducts and which can ultimately lead to cirrhosis of the liver. PSC is an autoimmune disease for which there is no treatment or cure and which is only eliminated through a liver transplant. This disease affects roughly three in 100,000 people and was the underlying liver problem impacting former Chicago Bears running back Walter Payton.

UPMC has advised the Ring family to begin raising funds to help cover the significant costs associated with a liver transplant. With his insurance carrier agreeing to continue coverage through the end of this year, out-of-pocket costs are estimated to be in the range of $100,000.00 to $120,000.00. Should Joshua lose his present coverage, the total costs will exceed $400,000.00.  Any funds raised in excess of the amounts needed for the transplant and subsequent medication and treatment will be made available to others suffering from this disease.  The family is exploring options for creating a foundation to assist young people with PSC.

Joshua, 23 years old, was born in Wales but has been a resident of Howard County since early 1977. He graduated from Georgia Tech in December, 1999 with a BS degree in Chemistry. Joshua has recently started a doctoral program in Pharmaceutical Science at the University of Kentucky, specializing in drug discovery and design. Motivated in no small part by his condition, Joshua's goal is to obtain the necessary education and qualifications to allow him to conduct medical research to help find cures to the many diseases which impact humanity.

The final tabulation is in and we raised $11,739.00 for The Joshua Ring
Liver Transplant Fund during October's live benefit auction and
autograph sessions with Johnny Unitas, Brooks Robinson, Chris Redman,
Lional Dalton and John Parrish. Thank you to all involved!
